b Bradfield St George, Suffolk d Bradfield St George, Suffolk William's death was sudden and unexpected. He had been at work normally 2 days previously and had been tending his allotment the evening before he died. They lived on Freewood St, Bradfield St George. William and Sarah were long term residents (40 years) of Bradfield St. George in Suffolk, a village which had good reason to be exceptionally proud of their family. Of their nine children all 5 boys served in His Majesty's Forces. Charles #5170 served in several engagements on the Indian Frontier before being posted to South Africa where he lost his life. He is commemorated on the South African War memorial in Bury St. Edmunds along with Private H Cobbold of the Suffolk Regiment. Corporal Freddy Cobbold #5177 enlisted in 1898 and also served in South Africa. He already had 12 years service when he reenlisted in 1914, joining the 1st Bn. East Surrey Regiment, only to be killed in France on 15th April 1915. He is commemorated on panel 34 of the Menin Gate memorial in Ypres, Belgium and in the church at Bradfield St. George. Private William Cobbold #5173 served with the 2nd Bn. The Rifle Brigade between 1896 and 1908 with Lord Kitchener #733 at Khartoum and in Greece and with Sir George White's beleaguered force at Ladysmith. He enlisted in 1914 at Bury St. Edmunds in A Company 1st Bn Suffolk Regiment and died on 8th May 1915. He is also commemorated on the Menin Gate, panel 21, in Ypres. Sgt. Maj. Alfred Cobbold #5175, although badly wounded in the arm in France served 21 years with the Rifle Brigade before going to Ellesmere College in Shropshire to run their CCF. (2 family members were educated at Ellesmere; Tim Cobbold #643 and Robin Minter-Kemp #803). Company Quarter Master Sergeant Arthur Cobbold #5183 joined The Rifle Brigade about 1907 and was promoted Colour Sergeant at the start of the war. He served until 19th August 1916 when he was drowned whilst on active service in the River Struma at Salonica in the Balkans. He is commemorated on the Rifle Brigade memorial. In addition to these five sons, two grandsons also rose to the occasion. Sgt. Edward Garland #5186 was a railway porter before he enlisted in the Wiltshire Regiment in 1915. He fought with his regiment at Loos, Salonika and Noyelles and was wounded just before the signing of the Armistice. Sadly he died of those wounds on 16th December 1918 and is buried at St. Server Cemetery Ext, Rouen, Seine, France. More fortunate was Pte. Fred Humphries #5197 who joined the 41st RFA (Royal Field Artillery), survived the war and lived to be 89 years old. |
