Ralph played cricket for the Eton XI in 1923,24 and 25, being captain in his last year, and rowed for Monarch in Upper Boats in the summer half of 1925. He went on to Magdalene College, Cambridge and played in the Varsity Match at Lords in 1927 and against MCC in June that year batting at No 5 for 33 runs and taking 4 wickets for 81 as a right-arm off break bowler. He was still playing cricket after the war when his R H Cobbold's XI drew with the Butterflies at the Hurlingham Club in June 1951. He joined Justerini & Brooks, Wine, Liqueur & Brandy Merchants in 1930 and became a director in 1936 only to have to go to war in 1939 when he was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards. He returned to J & B after the war, eventually retiring to Suffolk where he is reputed to have been one of the best shots in the county, ably assisted by his beloved gun dog Star.
