| Aged 19, Archibald Duffield Eden had his first commission in the 26th Regiment Cameronians (The Scottish Rifles), as an Ensign (21 2 1860). Within two years, he became Lieutenant (8 7 1862). His father General William Hassell Eden became Colonel of the 90th Light Infantry later in the same year. The 26th Regiment Cameronians were sent to serve in India, Bombay, Calcutta and Abyssinia (now Ethiopia). For his service there, he received the Abyssinia medal of 1868. In 1876, he was promoted to the rank of Captain. The 26th and 90th amalgamated in 1881 and at that point he was a Major in the new 1st Battalion. Records show that Archibald Eden had retired from the 1st Battalion by the end of May 1883. |
