Eden was commissioned from RMA Sandhurst on 18th June 1892 into what became the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry a few years later. He became a temporary Captain in W Africa on 5th February 1898 and saw service during the War of the Golden Stool with the 2nd Battalion West African Frontier Force being promoted full Captain on 24th February 1900. His service brought him high praise from his superiors throughout that war.

He served in the Second Boer War with the 1st Bn of his regiment being promoted Brevet Major on 15th January 1901. Between the wars he saw service in India and was promoted full major on 18th September 1911.

The start of the First World War saw him as part of the British Expeditionary Force with the 2nd Bn of the Ox & Bucks Light Infantry heading up an attack towards Poelcappelle in which he was wounded on 21st October 1914. He was back at battalion headquarters by April 1915 and is in command on 31st May and promoted Brevet Lt. Col. in June. In October he was hospitalised again returning to command in November by which time his battalion was part of 5th Infantry Brigade. His rank was increased to full Lt. Col. in February 1916 backdated to September 1915. He was awarded the DSO on 3rd June 1916 but only 10 days later he was sent to join the Headquarters of the 4th Army for the Battle of the Somme, becoming GOC 24th Infantry Brigade. He was wounded yet again in July 1916 but was back in command by late December. He became a Brigadier General in November 1917 and was in command of 52nd Brigade by April 1918, was wounded but was back in command of 57th Brigade by May 24th that year. His headquarters was hit by a bomb in August and he received shell splinter damage to his head but recovered quickly. He retired on half pay in September 1919 and was awarded the Croix de Guerre.

After the war he was much involved in military activities, local politics and historical preservation.

The Trust has pictures of his sabre (now owned by Jordan Cassidy) which was an 1892 regulation blade with personalised etching updated with an 1895 steel guard but remained unchanged thereafter
