Wallace was the son of William Haward (1793-1875), a farmer of Little Blakenham, Suffolk and Mary Ann (1800-1880).

He entered the medical service of the army as an assistant surgeon in June 1854 and served with the 34th Regiment in the Crimea from December of that year, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol, for which he received the medal with clasp and the Turkish medal. He served also in the Indian campaign of 1857-8, being present at the action of Cawnpore on the 26th, 27th and 28th of November 1857, and the siege and capture of Lucknow and the relief of Azimghur, for which he also received the medal with clasp. He reached the rank of Surgeon in March 1866, and retired with the rank of deputy surgeon general in April 1881.
