My name is Malcolm Taylor, a retired lawyer and I have the privilege of calling Vince a friend for over 30 years. I wish to convey my deepest sympathy to Janet, Steve, Chris and Jenny, and his grandchildren.

I first met Vince at the Midland Club, unfortunately no longer in existence. Four of us - Dick Edwards, Ron Aubrey, Vince and myself became firm friends and eagerly awaited Friday nights for drinks, a meal and friendship. When the Midland Club was wound up we moved to the Canterbury Club. Janet affectionately named both the "Facsist Club." Vince must have given the impression to Janet that the views expressed by us were right of Ghengis Khan.

As a result of our friendship I did a lot of investment on behalf of Trusts and Clients through Vince's Brokerage. Vince was the best Bonds Broker in Christchurch. At one time he chaired the local branch of the Institute of Directors and was Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries for New Zealand.

Vince was a man of good deeds. He assisted Nazareth House with his financial skills. He was for 10 years on the Financial Board of the Methodist Church of New Zealand. The current CEO, Greg Wright is with us today. He helped the local branch of Manchester Unity Friendly Society over many years with his financial advice. The current Chairman of the Board, Paul Haglund, which serves a membership of about 20,000 is also with us today.

Vince was an amateur aviator - "The Biggles of the West Coast." Lately he was giving his time to the Wigram Aviation Museum and he was passionate about flying.

We were friends because we espoused a Christian ethic, we actively helped other not-for-profit organisations and of course we enjoyed each other's company. Vince was a man of standards, eg dress and golf etiquette. He didn't like to be asked "Are you having a good day?" at 7am by a garage attendant who could have no interest in the answer. He didn't like being called "Vince" or "Vincent" by someone he didn't know. It was Mr Duffy. Vince was a man of integrity, a man you could always trust. His faith was very important to him. That was always evident. He was however very tolerant of me, who didn't share it.

His first love was Janet - then his children and his grandchildren. He was very proud of his childrens' achievements - and they were all achievers. He would only briefly mention the challenges of parenthood. He was a positive man, a good man.

I will surely miss you, Vince.
