Thomas Humphreys [CFT #11900] |
| ||||
Henry Noel Humphreys (1807-1879) #1104 left the following statement about his family: "Our Humphreys settled in County Cavan in Ireland on Crown Grants in the reign of Elizabeth, about the same time that similar grants were made to Edmund Spencer the poet and Sir Walter Raleigh. It appears that these Humphreys sided with James 2nd in 1688, some of them being at the Battle of the Boyne. They also joined The Pretender and, after the Battle of Preston Pans and the events of 1745 their estates were sequestrated but in that class in which it was contemplated that eventual restoration should take place. Part of the family then scattered and settled in Wales and part in Scotland. In Scotland, one of the Humphreys married the heiress of the Alexanders, Earls of Stirling, about the succession to which there was so much disturbance about 25 years ago. The other part of the family settled in Wales and part went to Birmingham where my great grandfather, Thomas Humphreys in fact settled as one of them - there were two brothers, I believe. Charles was the son of Thomas; he (Charles) had several children, of whom my father, James Humphreys was the only son who had children, of which children I am the only survivor." |
