| b Ipswich (Baptised at St Clements) d (Buried at St Margaret's, Ipswich) Eldest son of William and Mary (BOWELL). In the north side of the churchyard of St Margaret's, Ipswich is a vaulted tomb to the memory of Rear Admiral Thomas Hallum who was a portman and had four times been bailiff of Ipswich. A Naval Career. Thomas Hallum's rise through the ranks commenced when, after a period serving with Admiral Vernon which included the taking of Porto Bello in 1739, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in which capacity he later served in the "Essex" under his friend and patron Captain (later Vice-Admiral) Harland, being advanced to the rank of Commander in 1759. When he departed from the "Royal George" he took with him some twenty men listed as 'Captain's Servants', presumably to form the nucleus of the crew of his next ship. He later served at Yarmouth, where he was appointed Regulating Captain in 1763. Appointment to the substantive rank of post-Captain implied subsequent advancement in the seniority list and promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral; such an appointment coming for him on 1st July 1793. Besides his naval activities he was Renterwrden & Receiver 1776-8; Treasurer of Christ's Hospital 1778-80 and Renterwarden/Receiver for Tooley's Foundation and Smart's Charity 1793/4. The Corporation of Ipswich provided a memorial to him in 1783. |
