Samir Shakir Mahmoud Sumayda’ie known as Samir Sumaidaie is an Iraqi politician and diplomat and was the Iraqi Ambassador to the United States, in office between April 2006 and December 2012.

Samir was the eldest of eight children. He left Iraq in 1960 to study in the UK where he obtained a degree in electrical engineering from Durham University in 1965. He obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in 1966 and chose to return to Iraq the same year. After Saddam Hussein seized power, Samir returned to the UK in 1973.

After returning to Baghdad from exile, he became a member of the Governing Council in 2002, then the Minister of Interior in 2004 and Permanent Representative to the UN in 2004 until 2006, and finally the Ambassador to the USA between the years 2006-2012.

During his years of exile in London, and whilst travelling in the Middle and Far East, Samir was a leading figure in the opposition to Saddam’s regime and helped form a number of political groups.

Samir met his Chinese wife Ying Yang in 1998 and they have much to share in common. She is particularly proud of her husband and his profound knowledge of, not only the political and diplomatic aspects of his life, but also the artistic side of his nature. Samir is an artist, a businessman and also a well known poet. He has designed the décor and Middle Eastern style of several bridges and pieces of architecture. One of his paintings is in the collection of the King of Brunei. Samir has been a promoter of the use of computer in Islamic Art whilst still revering artistic traditions. He has worked extensively with architectural designs, stained glass, ceramic tiling and marble inlays.
