From The Times, 28th February 1927: "Sir Samuel Hoare, British Air Minister and Lady Maud returned to London last week from a 12000 mile round trip inaugurating the London - Cairo - Delhi Air Service". She was awarded the DBE as the first woman to fly such a long haul. She opened the newly expanded & improved London Croydon Airport on 22nd May 1928. It was Britain's main international airport at that time. Sir Samuel fought in WW1 and was mentioned in despatches twice. He was Secretary of State, Air between 1922 and January 1924 and again between November 1924 and June 1929. He was Secretary of State, India between 1931 and 1935. He became 2nd Baronette Hoare of Sidestrand Hall, co. Norfolk and Hampstead, co Middlesex on 14th January 1931. He progressed to Secretary of State, Foreign Affairs between June 1935 and December 1935 and to First Lord of the Admiralty between June 1936 and 1937 and to Home Secretary between May 1937 and 1939. He was Lord Privy Seal between September 1939 and April 1940 and Secretary of State, Air between 1940 and May 1940 before being appointed Ambassador to Spain between May 1940 and December 1944. He was created 1st Viscount Templewood of Chelsea on 14th July 1944. |
