| b London d Plymouth, Devon Stephen and Mary separated. Stephen was educated at Pinewood Prep School and Eton. Our picture shows him aged 10 at Pinewood. A nice little story is attributed to Stephen in connection with his scholarship exam for Eton. He was required to translate an unseen passage of Greek into English which he did. The ancient Greeks did not use accents. They were introduced later by the Alexandrian Greeks as a guide to pronunciation Their purpose was lost in time but the rules survived and are still applied today. After Stephen had translated the piece correctly he added a note pointing out that the examiners had made a mistake in their use of accents. He was admitted to Eton. |
