Miss Gladys Grace, the daughter of Vice Admiral H E Grace and grand-daughter of W G Grace the cricketer was killed at about 4.30 pm on 21 7 1930 at Detling Aerodrome, near Maidstone in Kent. Lt. S E H Spencer, a Naval Officer stationed at Portsmouth Submarine Depot, who was piloting the aeroplane was also killed. Miss Grace and Lt. Spencer had paid a visit by air to relations at Chatham. After luncheon, they took off from Detling. When the machine was about 200ft up, it suddenly nose-dived and crashed. It burst into flames on striking the ground and the two occupants were unable to escape. People living nearby rushed to the wrecked plane but were beaten back by flames.

Lt. Spencer had been First Lt. and second in command of Submarine M3 at Portsmouth since April 1929. After being prepared for the Navy at Lee-on-Solent, he entered Osborne College as a cadet in September 1916 and passed out through Dartmouth College in 1920, when he took first prize in engineering. He served as Midshipman in the Emperor of India in the Mediterranean and in Ajax on the same station. He was promoted to Sub Lt. in November 1923. In 1928-29, he served a commission on general duties on the Battleship Ramillies. He gained his Aviator's Certificate on 22 12 1929 on a DH 60 'Moth'.
