The Colonel's career is unclear. He is listed as being in the Madras Artillery in 1857 and the Royal Regiment of Artillery at Dover Castle in 1871. He was gazetted, Major in 1878 and the 1881 census shows him as a Major in the Royal Artillery and the 1891 as a Colonel. He retired from the Army 10th December 1894. A portrait of Col Robt T Hamond MA (Madras Artillery), 1857 in the British Library cannot be him as he is unlikely to have been a Colonel at 18. He inherited the Lordship of the Manor of Mitchell Hall in Swaffham Bulbeck, Cambridgeshire in 1884 from his cousin, William Parker Hamond of Pampisford Hall, which he finally sold (including the Lordship of the Manor) in 1914. At his death his estate was valued just in excess of £15,000.
