Rupert St George Riley went to live in Canada aged nineteen to become a farmer. During the years 1929 to 1935, he worked for the Riley Car Company (not a member of this family). He helped to develop the Riley WD Tourer which he drove in rallies with great success. Later Riley cars went bust and was sold to the Nuffield Group.

His wedding to Barbara Mary Mackenzie was brought forward because of the 2nd World War in which he served reaching the rank of Colonel. However, as was common practice, he was bumped down to Lt. Colonel when he left the army in 1945.

Known in the family as 'Gumpy'.
