Eldest daughter of Geoffrey Bernard Youard, of Hartley Court, Longfield, Kent, by Hon. Rosalind Joan, 6th daughter of Baron Atkin, PC. Baptised May 10 1930 at Battle, Sussex. Educated at Benenden School & St. Paul's Girls School.

1947-8 Bonn University; 1948-9 Folkestone Technical College. 1949-65, worked for Liberal Party Organisation, including 5 years in the House of Commons as Secretary to Arthur Holt, M.P. for Bolton West; 4 years in the Liberal Party Research Dept., and 6 months as Secretary to Russell Johnston, M.P. for Inverness-shire and Alisdair Mackenzie, M.P. for Ross and Cromarty. Founder member of Lichfield Marriage Guidance Council; Founder Member Lichfield Citizens Advice Bureau; Founder Member Lichfield Adventure Playground Association. Justice of the Peace, Lichfield, Staffs., 1971-76; and Inner London Commission, Thames Division, from 1977. Member, Board of Visitors Swinfen Hall Prison for Young Offenders 1970-76 (Chairman 1975-76); Member Board of Visitors Pentonville Prison from 1977 (Chairman January 1981). Member of the Committee of Inquiry into the U.K. Prison Services from Dec. 1978-Sept. 1979 under Mr. Justice May (Cmnd 7673).

Compiler of the present edition of the Gibbs Family Pedigree, encouraged by her Godfather, Christopher Gibbs Chart IV (17).

Interests: Cabinet making (Craftswoman of the Year, Lichfield School of Art 1973); china mending; gardening. Friend of Christ Church, Spitalfields.

Rachel sat for Grace Macnair's painting 'Madonna in the Wilderness' (1953) which was given to Christ Church, Chelsea.
