b Cheshire From Maldon Grammar School in Essex Peter went to Newcastle University to study Zoology, thence to Liverpool attaining his PhD on the way. He was later awarded a personal chair held in the Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Biology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Liverpool. For his scientific writings during that period cf https://www.researchgate.net/scientific-contributions/40060890_P_H_Cobbold (covers 1981-2009). As one of his former students recalls: "Peter is well known for developing novel technologies and approaches to answer important biological questions: much of his lab was home-built!" He's also known to have enlivened a lecture by unexpectedly flashing up an image of Dali's 'slashed eye'. He continues in retirement to have an active involvement either at academic level or in his local U3A investigating and promulgating scientific issues of concern or interest/intrigue to him - volcanism, D3, UFOs, what next. He is also a lifelong petrolhead: his first car being a Morris Traveller, from which he eventually progressed - via a Citroen Diane, a Lotus, and an Aston Martin DB 2/4 - to a TR6. Being an engineer by inclination - though he's the first to say not by profession - he cut his eye teeth with car mechanics by dismantling the engine of the Traveller, putting it back together not entirely successfully: it subsequently broke down on a trip to north Norfolk from Essex. His other cars did not escape similar attention, fortunately increasingly expert, and ultimately he set about supercharging the TR6 - see https://supertrarged.wordpress.com/about/ He still has it, alongside vehicles more appropriate to life in retirement halfway along a track in the wilds of North Wales... As the professor said "No progeny, end of this line of Cobbolds" |
