| b 2 Cavendish Road, London d Surgical accident in hospital as a result of Peritonitis. Peter was born at home on 31st July 1916, a second child and a second son. Three years later, the family moved to Torquay in Devon. He was educated at Beaudesert Park in Gloucestershire. Sadly on 6th September 1928, aged only 12, Peter was taken ill at home with peritonitis and was rushed to Torbay Hospital which in those days, was close to the town centre. The duty surgeon performed an emergency operation but his appendix had perforated and Peter died from chloroform poisoning after surgery. The duty surgeon was no other than his own father Harold Kinder Griffith, Head Surgeon for twenty-five years at Torbay Hospital. The shock and horror of what had happened was almost unendurable. For a period of time, Peter’s mother Helena blamed her husband for her son’s death but fortunately, their unity finally overcome their grief, at least to a point where they could attempt to resume family life and regain a sense of normality. Peter’s older brother Anthony never completely overcame the loss of who was to him, a very special younger brother. Peter is buried in Torquay Cemetery.
