b Roydon, Asheldon Road, Wellswood, Torquay, Devon

Mary was educated at Cheltenham Ladies College after which she trained as an Occupational Therapist and lived in Harpenden, near Luton until her mother became ill in 1959. She made the decision to sell her home and resign her post as an OT in order that she could care for her mother. Accordingly, Mary returned to Little Orchard, Kingsley Green, near Haslemere in Surrey, the house to which her parents had retired some nine years earlier. Her mother Helena died from cancer on 21st September 1961, and was cremated.

Within a relatively short period of time, Mary’s father - Harold, also became ill, similarly suffering from cancer. Mary nursed her father until he had to be admitted to St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London where he died on 18th June, 1966.

After the family home was sold, Mary moved to Kinrose Cottage, Titty Hill near Midhurst where she remained with her vast family of dogs and cats. She fondly remembers the joy of exercising polo ponies, a job she managed to fit in between caring for her menagerie of pets. In 1982, she too returned to the West Country some three years after her eldest brother Anthony had returned to his home county on retirement.

From a young child, Mary exhibited an unflinching love for dogs and cats. At home, just below Haytor on Dartmoor, she kept around twenty-four dogs and about ten cats!

In 2004, Mary moved a few miles south of her beloved Dartmoor to a small bungalow where she lived until moving into a nursing home in Newton Abbot, Devon in August 2013. It grieved her immensely that for the six months before being admitted into care, she had to agree to her dogs, now only three in number, being re-homed as she was spending more time in hospital than at home. Mary died on 15th September having never married.
