| Mary was the daughter of Maj. James Gascoyne-Cecil, 4th Marquess of Salisbury, of the Coldstream Guards who was awarded an MC on 17th July 1944 in Italy. She was Mistress of the Robes (the most senior of the Ladies-in-waiting positions) to Queen Elizabeth II from 1953 to 1966 and the first Chancellor of the University of Exeter. |
