d Sussex At 11 years of age Shelley became head of the senior branch of an ancient Sussex family. His father having spent ‘vastly’ on elections and (not expecting his sickly son to live) sunk all his non-entailed property in an annuity, Shelley was compelled to sell Michelgrove when he came of age to disencumber the estate. On 7 Feb. 1792 he joined Brooks’s Club, and after service with the Duke of York in the Flanders campaign, associated with a fast set in fashionable society heavily involved in the Turf, in pugilism and in gambling. The Prince of Wales was said to tolerate, from Shelley, pranks ‘which would have caused others to be tabooed for life’. Sir John made 10 known appearances in major (1st class?) cricket matches between 1792 and 1795. He was mainly associated with Sussex and was an early member of the MCC. He also bred fine thoroughbred racehorses including Derby winners, Phantom (1811), Cedric (1824) and Priam (1830). Sir John was MP for Helston in 1806 and for Lewes, 1816 to 1831 with Sir George Shiffner, 1816-1826 and Thomas Read Kemp from 1826 until 1831. He succeeded to the title in September 1783 on the death of his father. Sir John and Lady Frances had 6 children. |
