Baronetcy of Bally Ellis in the County of Wexford created on 6th Dec. 1797 as a reward for having in the previous year raised a corps of volunteers in Ireland which he equipped at his own expense. He again raised another corps in Somerset in 1803. Sir John had 2 brothers, Thomas and Humphrey and 3 sisters, Elizabeth, Mary and Charlotte. He famously published in 1798 "A letter addressed to the gentlemen of England and Ireland, on the inexpediency of a federal-union between the two kingdoms". It ran to 71 pages. He married secondly, Mary Bradford. In addition to Henry shown below Sir John had sons Thomas (1797), John and Humphrey, all by his first wife.
