A founder of the Athenaeum Club. A Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Society of Arts. He was a great nephew of Sir Joseph Jekyll (1662-1738) who was knighted by William III in 1697. He became a Privy Councillor and Master of the Rolls under George I. (The Trust's papers on Sir Thomas Plumer who was also Master of the Rolls show that Sir Joseph was also buried in the Rolls Chapel [now demolished] in the lowest of five coffins on the South side.) |
