FIGHT OVER TENOR'S FUNERAL. A fight after the funeral of Mr. J. W. Turner, tho well-known operatic tenor, was followed at the Mansfield Police Court, England. On February 20, by Mr. John William Cecil Turner, son of the dead singer, being fined four guineas for striking his brother-in-law, Dr. John Hoole. Dr. Hoole stated that his marriage with Mr.Cecil Turner’s sister was an unhappy one, and his wife had left him, and taken with her the children, to whom he was deeply attached. 'I heard of Mr. Turner's death,' he continued, 'and I decided to go to tho funeral, in the hope of obtaining some information concerning the whereabouts of my children. As the feelings between myself and the Turner family were strained, I kept in the background at the cemetery, and spoke to none of the relatives. Afterwards Turner met me at an hotel, and ordered me to clear out, and later at the station he violently attacked me, blackening my eye, and making my nose bleed. Mr. Turner, in evidence, spoke of Dr. Hoole’s treatment of his wife. 'Knowing my sister’s unhappy life,' he stated, 'I felt that Dr. Hoole's presence at the funeral was an outrage and desecration, and on seeing him I said, 'You had better. clear out. Your coming here Is an absolute disgrace to us. Hoole’s dress was not in keeping with the occasion, as he wore a green overcoat. a grey felt hat, light trousers, and a colored tie, and smoked a cigar. his bearing was extremely aggressive, and when I told him never to interfere with the family again he raised his umbrella. I feared an attack, and got in the first blow. Afterwards it was a stand-up fight, all the other mourners, who were leaving by the train, looking on.’ J. W. Turner was the brother of the late Charles Turner, the operatic tenor, who carried on English opera in Australia for many years with Miss Annis Montague.
