James Hornby served with 115 Squadron based in Cambridgeshire and it was from here that his Lancaster Bomber took off for a mission to bomb the Ball Bearing Factories in Germany. The raid involved 734 aircraft made up of 460 Lancaster Bombers, 169 Halifaxes and 11 Mosquitoes. One half took off and two hours later the other half took off. 362 people were killed on the ground.
