John Cobbold Aldrich [CFT #3778] Born: 1807 Died: 1874 | ||
b Stowmarket, Suffolk d Ipswich, Suffolk John was educated at Bury St. Edmunds Grammar School and went on to Lincoln College, Oxford in 1825. He obtained his BA in 1828 and his MA in 1831. John was ordained deacon in 1830 and priest in 1831 both in Norwich. He was appointed Perpetual Curate, St. Lawrence, Ipswich in 1831, a position he retained for the remaining 43 years of his life. He would have been well aware that the ring of 5 bells in the tower at St. Lawrence were cast 4 in 1450 and 1 in 1480 and are the oldest in the world. What he would not have known (but he would certainly have been delighted) is that following a declaration that the tower was unsafe in 1985 the bells were all restored to perfect working order in September 2009 and are rung to this day. |
