The Times, (London) Saturday 27th October 1917 reported as follows:

" A verdict of Accidental Death was returned at an inquest held yesterday at Giggleswick, Yorkshire, on the body of the Rev. John Chevallier, 56, rector of Great Horwood, who died after being knocked down by a cyclist on the evening of October 16th.

Mr Chevallier had been acting as a temporary assistant master at Giggleswick Grammar School, in order to release another master for military service. The evidence showed that on October 16th he went for a walk with a colleague and as they were returning about 7 o'clock Mr Chevallier was knocked down by a cycle ridden by a farm hand. He was rendered unconscious and was found to be suffering from a small scalp wound at the back of his head, injuries to the right eye and slight concussion of the brain. He died last Wednesday from hemorrhage at the base of the skull. The cyclist explained that he was trevelling from five to eight miles an hour at the time; the night was very dark and he could not see above a yard or two in front of him. He had a bright lamp on the front of his machine and rang his bell when he was 200 yards from Mr Chevallier."
