General John Tatton Butler Brown and his wife were photographed in Cork in 1881 just before he retired. He is shown wearing his full dress uniform. He has no beard but a heavy moustache and side burns. He has a CB and medals from the Crimean and Zulu wars. He died aged 52 but she lived on for another 36 years.

Appoimted to 6th Foot 31/4/1814; served in France 1817-1818; served at Cape of Good Hope from 6/1821 - 5/1825; became a Major 29/8/1826; Appointed to 88th Regiment 2/7/1829 and commanded Depot Corps until 6/1832 when ordered to join the service companies in the Ionian Islands until 7/1836; became Lt. Col. 10/8/1839 of 88th Regt. and exchanged to 56th Regt.in Canada; ordered home 7/1842; on 20/2/1846 ordered to augment 56th Regt to 1,292 NCOs and men in only 7 weeks; praised by Duke of Wellington; 12/1846 with 56th to Gibralter where served until 5/1851 when embarked for Bermuda where Commandant of the troops for 2 years and administered the government of the Islands for 8 months; after commanding the 56th for 14 years was appointed to Staff as Commandant of Chatham Garrison where served for whole of Crimean War and Indian Mutiny; relieved on being promoted Maj. Gen. 17/5/1860; appointed Col. of the 90th Lt. Infantry 24/10/1862; received extra £100 pa for distinguished and meritorious service; promoted Lt. Gen. 10/9/1864 and Gen. 4/3/1872.
