He wrote the book of the stage musical of 'Mary Poppins' for Cameron Mackintosh and Walt Disney. His debut as a film director, 'Separate Lives', which he adapted himself from Nigel Balchin's novel, gained critical acclaim and an award from the National Board of Review in New York.
