of Cobbinshaw (or Cobenshaw), West Lothian. Hermiston is in the parish of Currie, where many burials of early Andersons are recorded.

Dr Anderson was baptised at Currie Church, nr Edinburgh in 1739.

He was an important (and underestimated) figure of the Scottish Enlightenment.

Dr Anderson and Margaret(his first wife) had thirteen children:- Alexander Seton (1769-1850); William (1771-1806); Ann (1772- 11 02 87); George (1773-1817); John (1775-1807); James 1776-1864; Margaret (1778-1863); David (1780-1799); Robert (1781-1840); Catherine (1783- 25 05 1787); Henry (1784-1810); Walter (1786- 08 03 87) and Walter (1788-9).

Ann, Catherine, Walter and Walter are all buried in Greyfriars Churchyard, Edinburgh, all having died in childhood. No memorials were erected.

James and his family originally lived at Monkshill Farm in Aberdeenshire between 1763 and 1783 but moved to Cotfield in Leith where Margaret died not long after the move. She left eight sons and a daughter.

Dr Anderson remarried at the age of sixty-two Sarah Hooper.

He was buried at West Ham Church in Essex in 1808.
