b Auchtermuchty, Fife, Scotland d Cork, Ireland John and Mary had 5 children. John Arnott arrived in Cork in 1837. After a minor failure he opened a drapery store from which grew the Arnotts department store chain. He was involved in a number of other businesses in shipping, brewing and newspapers. Arnott was elected Lord Mayor of Cork in 1859, '60 and '61. He served as MP for Kinsale between 1859 and 1863. He was knighted in 1859 and became a baronet, of Bailey, on 12th February 1896. In addition to being a committee member on the Irish Poor Law Relief Bill he was a philanthropist with a concern for children. Anthony Cobbold 2011 |
