Herbert Morley Fletcher was educated at his aunt's Miss Fletcher's School in Brighton up until 1874, when he moved to Mr. Gardner's School in Liverpool. In 1878, he attended Mill Hill followed by the Royal Liverpool Institute. At Trinity College, Cambridge, he gained a 1st Class Honours Degree in both parts of the Science Tripos. He was an Athletics Blue, 100 yards and quarter mile, 1887; 100 yards 1888 and President of the Cambridge University Athletic Club 1888.

At Trinity, he was known by his middle name, and he was thereafter known professionally as 'Morley' to avoid confusion with H. Martineau Fletcher. Morley studied at Freiburg and Vienna; Assistant Physician St Bartholomew's Hospital, 1904, returing in 1929 as Consulting Physician. He was on the staff of many other hospitals - Queen Alexandra's House, East London Hospital for Children (Consulting Physician), Queen Charlotte's Hospital, Royal Buckinghamsire Hospital, Hertford County Hospital and Infants' Hospital. During the 1914-18 War, Morley served as a Major with the Royal Army Medical Corps, serving throughout at the First London General Hospital in Camberwell and at other hospitals. Morley was an Hon. Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. In 1892 he moved to 98 Harley Street in London which became a family home together with it holding a consulting room. The family later left London for Hengrove, St. Leonards, Tring in Buckinghamshire, a property designed by his cousin, the architect Percy Richard Morley Horder. In 1937, Morley moved to Burton Corner, Duncton, Petworth in Sussex.
