The Rev. Harold Kitchener was Headmaster of St. Mary's College, Saint Lucia in the West Indies from 1905 to 1907. He had been educated at Newbury Grammar School and was the second son of Thomas Kitchener, a medical doctor. He was a first cousin once removed from 1st Earl Kitchener (#733 on this tree). Harold matriculated as a non-collegiate student at Oxford in 1895 and gained his Honours Degree in Modern History VI in May 1902; the year in which he married his wife, Frances. Surprisingly his Headmaster's Report for 1906 has survived and gives us an insight into the operation of the college while he was at the helm.

'The School year began on January 16th and ended on December 15th, during which period the number on the roll varied from 68 in the first term to 71 in the last: ten boys hold Government and four hold Rector's Scholarships. The School is composed of three divisions:-

Upper School containing Forms VI and V

Middle School containing Form IV

Lower School containing Forms III and II.

The Upper School was again entered for the Cambridge Examinations, Form VI taking the Junior and Form V the Preliminary, there being 9 of the former and 15 of the latter; three boys of Form VI and one of Form V were not entered. One boy sat for the London Matriculation in June but was unsuccessful in Mathematics. In addition to the Compulsory Subjects (Arithmetic and Dictation) the following were taken by both Junior and Preliminary boys:- Latin, English (Composition and Grammar), Geography, History, Scripture and Algebra. For English Author the Preliminary boys took "The Heroes of Asgard" and the Juniors Shakespeare's Henry V, five of the latter also offered "The Coverly Papers" and "The Coming and Passing of Arthur."

Two new subjects - Chemistry and Botany were taken by the Preliminary candidates; but the former was only taken by 4 boys. All the Juniors offered Book-keeping, five Geometry, and one Physical Geography. Trigonometry and Geometrical Drawing, both new subjects, were taken by another boy.

In May the whole School was inspected and examined by Mr. O. Emtage, MA, Oxford, Headmaster of the Lodge School, Barbados, whose report was afterwards published in the St. Lucia Gazette.

The Staff was increased in February by the addition of Mr. A. H. Payne, of Barbados; he left however in the following April and the present Staff consists of -

The Headmaster, Mr. H. Kitchener, M.A. Oxford

Mr. P. H. Russell, of England,

Mr. C.F. Richardson, of St. Lucia,

Mr. W.E. Davis, of St. Vincent, and the Rev. Father Harcourt who visits the School twice a week to give lessons in Religious Knowledge.

The discipline of the School out of the actual teaching hours is in the hands of Monitors, who are chosen by, and responsible to the Headmaster himself. There are at present five Monitors. The Games of the School are Cricket and Football, in addition to which a Chess Club and a Draughts Club also exist. There is a good Library, Reading Room, a School Parliament and a Magazine. Attempts are being made to procure materials for a Gymnasium. There is also an Old Boys Club in connection with the School. The management of the games is in the hands of the Games Committee. The subscription to the Games is 1/- a term payable by every boy.

The February earthquake necessitated a break in the term's work; this was made good by an increase in the length of the third term. The slight damage caused to the building on the 16th February was repaired during the summer holidays. The work and conduct of the boys has been good, and the attendance most satisfactory'.

Signed, H. KITCHENER, MA., Oxford. Headmaster.

Thanks to Calixte George who is writing a History of St.Mary's College.

Note: The devastating 1906 earthquake in San Francisco was on April 18th. Harold Kitchener refers to an earthquake on 16th February, so it must have been a different one or he has made an error with the date.
