Lt. Commander Durell was killed on D-Day when his ship, HMS Isis (a Destroyer), stuck a mine whilst patrolling off the coast of Normandy. HMS Isis lies in 20 metres of water, 5 miles off the coast of Normandy and all 155 men are shown on the Plymouth Memorial.

He was survived by his widow, the former Ruth Pearson, and his one year old son.

Lt Commander Durell was the son of Frederick Oswald Durell Durell (2 x Durell's) born 12 08 1872 Havant, Hampshire and died 26 5 1956 Hindhead, Surrey and Sybil Harriette Elliot born 29 5 1875 Westminster, London and died 24 12 1953 Surrey, South Western. They married 1903 Chelsea, London and had three children.
