Herbert Crossley became a member of the Royal Windermere Yacht Club in the 1870s and Commodore in 1881, 1886 and 1887. "In the Seren, Naiad, Saturn and Ava, he turned out four very clever and successful vessels, which he sailed with great ability and knowledge of the lake. As a draughtsman he had few equals among yacht designers. In 1879, he designed and built the Seren, and in 1880 it eclipsed all the racing yachts of this period; during the first year, she only won one prize; but in her second season, after some alteration, she proved quite invincible and carried all before her, and it may be said that her success led to reconsideration of the measurement rule." 'Windermere and the Royal Windermere Yacht Club', ed. by Sir William Forwood.

1890 and 1891, of Ferry Green, Bowness-on-Windermere; after his second marriage lived at Portland Place, London and later in Paris. 1904, of Cork Street, Burlington Gardens, London. At the time of his death, he was living in a property on Ham Common, Surrey. He became a Roman Catholic.
