b London d Buried in family vault at St. Clement's, Ipswich. Henstridge was baptised at Holy Trinity, Minories, London on 26th July 1775. She was only 2 years old when her mother died and was adopted by George and Mary Routh, #62/63. All her siblings were men. 1841 was living in Tacket St. Ipswich, allegedly in a nine bedroomed house standing in an acre and a quarter of grounds. Henstridge inherited the 172 acre Monument Farm in Foxhall from Mary Routh 'for life and then to my friend Arthur Biddell and after his death to his children equally' It was Arthur Biddell who handled the sale of the Tacket Street house after her death. The inscription in a book Sacrae Picture dedicated to Mrs Henstridge Cobbold by Rev Francis Cobbold #121 sent us scouring the records for a married Henstridge Cobbold without success. We have now (2021) learned that in Georgian times it was quite normal for senior spinsters to be addressed as Mrs so we have concluded that this is indeed the lady to whom the book is dedicated. Hence it is this Mrs Henstridge Cobbold who subscribed to The Rationality of Revealed Religion in 1835; to The Quarterly Review, London, vol 121; and The University Magazine: A Literary and Philosophic Review 1836 (July-Dec - Stanford University Magazine. More importantly she is quoted on page 278 of Family Fortunes as having a portfolio which included Canal Company shares and as having a financial agent, one Biddell who is listed as Miss Henstridge's financial advisor. Not much room for doubt any longer. |
