George was a scholar of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, admitted 2nd September 1757, aged 17. BA (6th Wrangler) 1762 and MA 1765. Vicar of Ashfield, 1773; Vicar of Debenham, 1773-1790; Rector of Holbrook, Suffolk. He probably died in Ipswich as he has a Monumental Inscription at St Clement's, Ipswich. George and Mary Routh adopted a child of William Cobbold's first marriage who was born in 1777 and died on 4th January 1849. In a small planting of firs off Monument Farm Road stands an iron faced monument in memory of the Rev George Routh, erected by his widow in 1831. This gave rise to the name Monument Farm. George was the son of a portitor (ferryman) of Norwich and had been born there. He owned a home called Low House (originally two farm cottages) in Foxhall outside Ipswich where he used to escape for periods of solitude and prayer. George was the son of a portitor (ferryman) of Norwich and had been born there. He was ordained deacon in Norwich and later priest. He was a grandson of Nicholas Bacon MP for Ipswich 1685-87. The inscription on the monument says 'With a mind deeply impressed with religion and adorned with literature he often sought retirement on this secluded estate'. |
