b Eastbourne, Sussex d No. 4 Clearing Hospital, Lillers, France Capt. Godfrey Cavendish died two days after wounds received on 20 12 1914 in Flanders. He is buried in the Lillers Communal Cemetery, France. His parents are buried in the Eastbourne Ocklynge Cemetery in Sussex. The inscription on their tomb reads: (Top) George Francis Compton only son of Reginald R F and Mary Cavendish born August 23rd 1881 died Feb 3rd 1884 aged 2 years and 5 months. "Her little child hath gone to sleep why should a mother watch and weep Earth's ills were gathering round his nest He crept into a father's breast." (Slab) Also of Mary Constance Dearly loved wife of Reginald R F Cavendish who died 14th July 1914 aged 54 years. Her peaceful being slowly passed by to some more perfect peace. Also of Godfrey Lionel John elder son of Reginald R F and Mary C Cavendish Captain 97th Deccan Infantry attached to 9th Bhopals who died 22nd Dec 1914 of wounds received in action at Givenchy in Flanders December 20th aged 30 years. Dulce et Decorum est Pro Patria Mori. (It is sweet and glorious to die for one's country). |
