| Guy was educated at Eton, 1898/2 to 1903/2 and went on to Trinity College, Cambridge where he graduated in the Natural Sciences Tripos. He became a member of the London Stock Exchange in 1912 and remained a member until 1946. He served with the York and Lancaster Regiment in WWI being wounded on the Somme in 1916, the same year as he was awarded the Military Cross. Neville Lytton, later 3rd Earl Lytton in his book 'The Press and the General Staff' includes a passage in praise of Captain Cobbold which reads: "I thought especially of Captain Cobbold and his splendid example. I have not seen him from that day to this; I heard that he had been badly wounded on the Somme. If ever his eye should light on these pages I should like him to know that in the hour of death and on the day of judgement I shall think of him and hope to have a small particle of his glorious courage." In WWII Guy served as a Captain in the Home Guard. He is said to have travelled extensively in Canada, India, Africa, China and Japan; presumably this was between the wars. It seems that he inherited Oaklands in Belstead Road, Ipswich and/or Belstead House from either his father or his half brother. Guy did a lot of work on the family tree. His hand writing is well known and copies of his work were sent to a number of family members. The work of the Trust has its roots in research carried out by Felix Thornley Cobbold and Guy Fromanteel Cobbold. ✓ |
