of Christchurch Mansion. Claude's year of birth may have been in 1676 or 1677. The Fonnereaus were a Huguenot merchant family based in London. In the year of the death of his wife Elizabeth, Claude purchased Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich in 1735 from Price Devereux, 10th Viscount Hereford. When he died he left nine children and vast wealth.

Claude and his family lived in Scythe Lane in the parish of St Antholin's, London. His certificate of denization is dated 15 04 1693, when he was about 17, and he was naturalised by Act of Parliament on 02 04 1698.

In his will, Claude left Christchurch to his eldest son Thomas and his house in Scyth Lane to his sons Zachary and Peter, on the condition that his wife and daughters be allowed to continue to live there free of rent.

An entry in the family bible states that Claude "died suddenly in his coach the 5th of April, 1740, at Hogsdon, coming from his Country House at Edmonton to London". (This has since been interpreted as Hoddeston in Hertfordshire but is almost certainly Hoxton, near Shoreditch).

Claude was buried near his first wife in the chancel of St Antholin's on 16 04 1740.
