Elizabeth Sturgeon ( Elliston ) Hider;

Never was the Cobbold motto "Strength in Adversity" so truly reflected as in the life of Elizabeth. Her happy childhood ended at the age of seven when her parents separated. Her mother placed her and one of her sisters in Dr. Barnardo's Orphanage claiming them to be "fatherless children". After two years Herman discovered them, and had them returned to their mother.

Emma then immigrated to Canada, and put the girls out to work at a very early age. In 1914 they returned to England. Elizabeth had just married Albert E. Hider. He was serving in the Canadian Reserves as a motor driver when her son was born during a Zeppelin raid over London. For her safety, Albert arranged for her to take the baby now nine months old, and return to Canada aboard a Hospital Ship carrying wounded soldiers. The only accommodation was down in the hold of the ship. Elizabeth was so seasick the baby was put in the care of the soldiers for three days until she was well again. When Albert returned, her life took on new meaning, and a turn for the better.

A very sincere, sympathetic, graceful lady in every way. She and Bert both had wonderful senses of humor, thus providing a happy and loving home for their two children; George and Peggy. She instilled in us the ability to see the humorous side of life's difficulties, which greatly helped us get through the great depression with flying colours.

She was gifted with a beautiful singing voice and good health. Her pride was her husband, home and family. She, like her sister Ethel, was very astute in her abilities in character reading, and at times needed just a sample of handwriting or a picture of a person for an analysis of them. Her hobbies were knitting, sewing and needle work at which she was meticulous.

On her 90th birthday, she recited from memory a seven page humorous poem entitled,"The Inventor's wife" to the enjoyment of all.

She succumbed to cancer in her 91st year at Parkwood Retirement Home in Waterloo, Ont. Canada in 1984.
