He is missing from the 1861 and 1871 censuses and in 1881 is living in The Lodge, Tannington, Suffolk as a 'retired farmer' (aged 31). A clue as to where his inheritance went is given by the following extract about another branch of the Branfords; "William Catton Branford (grandson of Benjamin Branford) maintained some intermittent contact with his cousin Edgar Branford in Norfolk, the two of them being involved in racing at Newmarket where they both lost a great deal of money"

He also apparently had his own pack of hounds till he ran out of money. Thereafter his occupation is described as 'own means'. One of his interests was the breeding of Malay fowl and in 1896 he co-authored a book 'The Malay Fowl and the Malay Bantam'. In 1888 he moved to 1 Doric Place, Woodbridge and is shown in the directory of that year at both addresses.

Edgar and Edith provided a home for the children of Edith's brother, Alfred Hill who lived in Spain and in the census of 1911, Arthur Reynolds Hill is shown as staying with them in Woodbridge. Edgar and Edith had 5 sons and 2 daughters but only 1 of the daughters survived to adulthood.
