| 4th Baron Mottistone David was Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight from 1986 to 1995 and the last Governor of the Isle of Wight from 1992 to 1995. His family have played a prominent role on the Isle of Wight since the 1850s. He was made an Honorary Doctor of Literature by Bournemouth University in 1993 and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1984 and was a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. He succeeded to the title 4th December 1966. He served in the Royal Navy, commanding HMS Cossack 1958/59 and HMS Ajax 1963/65 before retiring in 1966. Winston Churchill and the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor) were his godparents |
