| Cecil Bates was the third of seven sons born to Sir Edward bates, the 2nd Baronet, of the Bates shipping family, and his wife Constance Elizabeth Graves. Hylda and Cecil met for the rirst time in 1903/4 when she was 18 and he 22. They renewed their friendship in late 1917 or early 1918 while he was home on leave from France. Cecil proposed to her by letter on 12th February 1918; she accepted on 21st of February and they married on 27th June 1918. Cecil had two brothers with distinguished war records. Frederick flew with the RFC/RAF and earned an AFC and received four Mentions in Despatches in Syria and Palesine. Denis in the Army was also assigned to Syria and Palestine and won an MC and was also Mentioned in Despatches. |
