Charles Peter Gwydyr Cameron was born in Harlesden, Middlesex on 18th January 1885 to Dr Charles Hamilton Hone Cameron MRCS and Mary Louisa Savile Cameron nee Shepherd. He was educated at St. Bede's College, Eastbourne and at the Royal Military College, Woolwich.
He was commissioned as 2nd Lt. on 27th July 1905 (London Gazette, August 15th 1905) and was serving in the Hong Kong and Singapore Battalion, Royal Garrison Artillery, Gun Hill Barracks, Kowloon in 1911. The census showed him as a single lieutenant having served 5 years in Hong Kong. He married Dorothy Scott Oliver on 18th July 1911 and they had 2 sons.
Charles Cameron disembarked in France on 14th October 1914 with the British Expeditionary Force and went on to win a Military Cross in 1915 (London Gazette, 14th January 1916). He was appointed Acting Major from September 1916 to 24th February 1917 and attached to the 9th Corps Heavy Artillery Headquarters Staff in March 1917 (London Gazette,5th April 1917). The 9th Corps took part in the Battle of Lys from 9th to 29th April 1918 and that was the day Capt. Cameron was injured. He died later that day at a casualty clearing station and was buried at Arneke Cemetery.
He is remembered on memorials at Holy Trinity & St. Mary's Old Town, Eastbourne, Eastbourne College and in Sproughton Church.
