Capt. Cromwell Lloyd-Davies was the youngest of 3 sons and 1 daughter of Dr. John Lloyd-Davies JP who was born in Llanelley, Carmarthenshire, Wales in 1871. He was a Physician and Surgeon and an alderman of Newport Town Council in Monmouthshire.

He married Esther Ann (Nancy) Evans in 1899, she having been born in Dowlais, Glamorganshire in 1871. They married on 24th October 1899 in Bethania Chapel, Dowlais and in addition to Cromwell had another two sons, John Patrick and Norman Bamford Campbell and one daughter, Nansi Lorna. All the children were born in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales.

Little is known of John Patrick and Nansi but Norman who was born 19th November 1901 became a Barrister at Law and married Lydia Martah E Rogers in London in 1941. Norman died in 1984 aged 82.

Dr. John died in Newport on 15th March 1937 and the Gloucestershire Echo recorded the event thus: "Twelve hundred children lined the route at the funeral at Newport, Mon., yesterday of Dr. J Lloyd-Davies JP, honorary freeman of Newport, chairman for 21 years of Newport Education Authority, for many years an alderman, and a councillor for 40 years".

Capt Lloyd-Davies was promoted Lt. on 15th July 1924; Lt.Cdr. on 15th February 1934; Cdr. on 31st December 1939 and was in command of HMS Glasgow 8th August 1944 until 23rd October 1944. He won his DSC on 28th of November 1944 and his DSO on 23rd May 1952.
