b Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire d Marylebone, London Arthur was MP for Hanley, Staffordshire, 1900 to 1906 and for Leek, Staffordshire from January to December 1910. He won the latter seat by only 10 votes and did not stand again. Remembered by family with some affection as 'Uncle Arthur'. Arthur was a first class cricketer playing for his school in Gloucestershire in 1875, Oxford University 1876-1879, a member of MCC 1876-1894 and played for Middlesex 1878. He made 44 appearances at first class level, scoring 969 runs and taking 26 wickets. He was also active in rugy union for Oxford University and once for England against Scotland in 1876, the last 20 a side International. He also had a military career. |
