The eldest son of Rev. George Crookshank, Vicar of Chigwell in Essex: George Crookshank born 15 9 1796 and died 3 3 1833 Surrey and Amelia Rosa Elizabeth Charlotte Souter Kelly born 1801 Middlesex and died 29 9 1871 Middlesex. They married 1824 Chippenham, Wiltshire and had 4 children. Amel Elizabeth remarried 1838 to Edwin George Tayton born 1811 and died 1845. They had one son. Amelia Kelly was the only daughter of George Robert Abraham Kelly, Major of 2nd Madras Infantry.

General Crookshank was educated at Grantham College and in Dusseldorf. He was appointed to the Commissariat on 27 01 1844 and promoted to Deputy Assistant Commissary-General on 26 12 1846 and Deputy Commissary-General, Dublin District on 11 12 1872 before becoming Comptroller of Army Expenditure, Ceylon. He served in Crimea, 1854-56, with the Cavalry Division and was present at the engagements of Bulganac and McKenzie's Farm and the battles of Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Tchernaya and throughout the Siege of Sebastopol, receiving a medal with four clasps, Turkish medal, 5th class of the Medjidie. He then served with the China Expedition of 1857-58 and was in Commissariat charge of the Expeditionary Field Force and was present at the capture of Canton for which he received a medal with one clasp. He was nominated Companion of the Order of the Bath on 29 12 1873.

Annie and Alexander lived in Drumhalry and Birrenaugh, County Longford, Ireland. Alexander was buried with military honours in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Harold's Cross, Dublin on 19 04 1877. The funeral was attended by HRH The Duke of Connaught and officers of the Dublin Garrison. A tablet was erected to Alexander's memory in St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin.
