Arthur's father was Bertram Hanbury-Sparrow and his mother was Christina Sillery. He had a brilliant war record winning a DSO, an MC and a bar to his DSO. "The Land Locked Lake" is his record of his wartime experiences. It was reprinted in a limited edition of 500 in 1977. The following tribute was paid to Capt. A A H Hanbury-Sparrow on 18th January 1918: Captain A A H Hanbury-Sparrow DSO of the Royal Berkshire Regiment is described as a born soldier, and one who is absolutely fearless and most brave. "I remember" said a Berks soldier "on one occasion a few months back, when he led the battalion into action, one of the companies was bombed out of a trench which he had taken and had commenced to retire. Seeing what was happening Captain Hanbury-Sparrow ran across, stopped them and rallied them under heavy fire, in the meantime getting another company across to re-take the trench, which they did by bombing the Germans out. All the time the gallant officer exposed himself to heavy fire".

His MC was won on 4th March 1917 and it was presented to him at Buckingham Palace on 18th July. The citation included "Although wounded he led his men in a most gallant manner".

After the war Arthur stood as the Liberal candidate for the Ludlow constituency in the 1929 General Election. He came third behind the Unionist and Labour candidates gaining 5,259 votes or 21.3%

In 2021 the Trust obtained copy No. 52 of the Private Edition (500) of The Land-Locked Lake signed by the author.
