b Lambeth, London d Hanover Square, London Alexander's parents were Otto Adolphus Viktor Alexander Berens (1797-1860) born in Riga and Charlotte Busby. It is not known when Otto came to London but by 1827 he was established as a respectable merchant. In November that year he narrowly escaped a serious robbery. By 1856 he was in business with Ludwig Blumberg in a company called Berens, Blumberg and Company in impressive offices at 2-6 Cannon St. He married 19-year old Charlotte, the daughter of a farmer from Bicester in Oxfordshire in1832 at St. Mary Magdalen, Old Fish Street. In 1855 Charlotte's father died in the Oxford County Lunatic Asylum; it seems that Charlotte may have had mental health problems as she took to drink and died of cirrhosis of the liver in January 1857 at the age of 44. In September the following year he married again, a woman half his age, the 30 year old Louisa Cooke at St. Matthews, Brixton. 18 months later Otto died on 15th April 1862. His mausoleum in West Norwood Cemetery, created with Charlotte in mind, is spectacular; the architect was Edward Middleton Barry, the son of Charles Barry (who designed Parliament) and the sculptor who created marble columns and angels was Thomas Earp. The contribution of 'The London Dead' is acknowledged. Anthony Cobbold June 2018 |
